The country of Turkey never fails to deliver when it comes to things to do, cultural experiences and historical attractions. From eating my way around Istanbul, and seeing the incredible mosques, to beach times in Alanya, to hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, and exploring the cave cities in the region, you can find out the best places to travel to in Turkey.

Istanbul City Turkey Highlights

Istanbul is a city that wears its cultures and history well, blending them into an exciting city that has much to offer travelers from around the world. Founded during Neolithic times, Istanbul today is a modern city that remains true to its historic heritage through its mosques, basilicas and ancient bazaars. Standing between the East and the West, Turkey’s largest city offers an aura of intrigue and charm that will appeal to all visitors.

Here’s a look at the top tourist attractions in Istanbul:
Blue Mosque

Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque by many tourists because of its bluish interior decoration, is the most important mosque of Istanbul. It was built by the Ottoman sultan Ahmed I between 1609 – 1616.  The mosque is covered with rugs as a general tradition in any mosque, thus people have to take their shoes off before entering. It's permitted to take photos inside and use flash without any problems.

The mosque is generally open to the visitors during the day, but closed for a short time during the prayers. During the summer nights, light and sound shows are organized in the park next to the mosque.

Hagia Sofia

Hagia Sophia is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935. The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place.

It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries. The museum is open between 09:00 - 16:30 (except on Mondays as of 2017), with longer opening hours during the summer months.

Princess Island

The Princess Islands are a chain of nine rather small islands in the Sea of Marmara.  Buyukada is the largest and the most popular of Princess Islands. The main feature of any of the Princes’ Islands is the sound of silence. All motorized vehicles are banned, making the islands an oasis of peace and quiet. The only sounds you’ll hear are bicycle bells and the typical sounds of horse hoofs. Yep, that’s right. Horse-drawn carriages and bicycles are the main transportation means on the islands.

How to Get to the Princes’ Islands and Back!
By boat, that goes without saying. But there are different ferries to choose from. There are the sea buses (fast ferries) operated by IDO, and the regular ferries operated by Şehir Hatları. Both ferry types depart from Kabataş — easily accessible & cheap price with public transportation.

Grand Bazaar

Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is the largest covered market in the world with over 4,000 shops, a must visit place on your trip to Istanbul.
